

Joseph Bouchard
PhD student in Latin American Politics at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on security, governance, and development in Latin America, with a positivist and critical lens. He has worked for over 3 years in the region as a journalist, researcher, and consultant on geopolitics and security. His articles regularly appear in The Diplomat, Le Devoir, RealClearPolitics, Common Dreams, and Reason.
Joseph holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Carleton University and has published extensively on geopolitics, security policy, and governance in both academic and policy outlets. He has received numerous fellowships and awards, including two SSHRC Graduate Scholarships, MINDS Master’s Scholarship (Department of National Defence of Canada), and media grants from the Center on Conflict and Development, in partnership with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, for field research in Bolivia and Colombia.
Joseph is fluent in French, English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, and continues to learn Haitian Creole and Russian. His work in fighting corruption has earned him a permanent sanction from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He looks to spend his post-doctoral career advancing peace, democracy, and good governance in the Americas.
